The Residency Program
Bring dance and the performing arts into your school community! Now in its fifth year, the Residency Program is aimed at reaching underserved elementary schools throughout the state of New Hampshire. Our residency programs bring NHDI's professional teacher/choreographers into a school for a one, two or three week period. Students in grades three through six are ideal for this program. The goal of a residency is to create a series of dances to be performed for the school community or the community at large. Last year more than 1100 children in grades K-7 experienced the joy and excitement of NHDI first-hand through a residency program. How would NHDI benefit my school? NHDI does not aim to create professional dancers; rather our mission is to introduce children to the joy of the arts through dance, so that hopefully appreciation and participation with the arts continues throughout their lifetime. NHDI teaches excellence by introducing children to the rewards of physical exertion through the rigor of hard work. Through teamwork, listening, and practice, children learn that there is no end to what they can achieve with their bodies and their minds. Our energetic teachers introduce children to joy through movement, and the pride that comes in the result is unparalleled.
What can I expect from a residency? You can expect that you and your students will have fun! NHDI is committed to making the art of dance a joyful and memorable experience for the children it reaches. Dance gets children out from behind their desks while still stretching their abilities, and introduces them to a primal form of communication. As a culture, we dance to celebrate; we dance to mourn; we dance to mark the passing of time. You can expect an enthusiastic, dedicated and prepared teacher who will lead an organized hour-long dance classes while teaching your students how to move to music while paying attention to rhythm, timing and style. You can expect at the end of the residency to have a program you can use in your own school, or bring on the road to local nursing homes, or even town meetings. You can expect to feel pride in the work your students do and the art that they create. Above all, you can expect to have students who hold a new appreciation for the arts and dance, and who can go to a performance and feel that they, too, have been performers once.
